Please welcome back Dirk to the fold after a 30 year hiatus. See it is never too late to come back.
Dirk tells me he is no longer running, but he does a mean mountain bike (easier on the knees and back). If I'm not mistaken in 1974/75 Dirk could run about a 4:40 mile, which amazes me to this day. And the late Peter Lortie kept right with him.

The late Peter Lortie? Sad news, I had no idea. I knew about David Guttman and Eric Hough. I hesitate to ask, but are there others?
Peter's death was a major blow to me. It hit me hard and it affected me for some time. Some good people went out of their way to may sure I got the news.
He was the first person I went "out there" with - one winter weekend in 1977 we went to Michigan and literally spent 20 hours a day on cross country skis. I've since gone further longer and bigger but it was with Peter that I figured out that I could push the endurance envelope. I'm grateful to him for that.
I'd known Peter was suffering for some time. I'm saddened to think that the last time I saw him that I wasn't as friendly or as supportive as I should have been.
I miss him.
Marcus, David Guttman is alive and well! You are thinking of Peter Guttman.-Jim Schwartz
Dirk -
I was touched by your comments here, and wanted to tell you that I feel very much the same. I wouldn't say that Pete pushed me athletically, but he did inspire me with his intelligence, and his love of language, ideas, and discourse. A brilliant guy, really. I miss him too.
It certainly was a big blow to lose him. Only recently – nine years after his death – did I find the courage to write about it for a column. I'll send you a copy if you're interested, and perhaps we can share a few more thoughts.
Glad to see you still enjoy the sporting life. You're looking good on that bike, man!
Peace -Kenny
